Fauna

I’m not sure if the lowly banana slug counts as fauna, but it should. These guys are huge. Sorry that we didn’t put a quarter on the ground to give you some idea of the scale of these things. The name banana slug is pretty appropriate, since they’re about the size of a peeled banana. Aside from the redwoods, these were the highlight of the day.
Also low on the phylogenetic chain are sea stars.
These guys are pretty cool…if you’re into animals that move so slowly you can’t see it without time-lapse photography. They do have the ability to regenerate severed limbs, which is cool. This guy likes to hang out in the tide pools around Pigeon Point Lighthouse. The guys below hang out a little way down the coast at Ano Nuevo State Reserve.
These guys are elephant seals. These aren’t even the big ones. Although much bigger, they actually seem to move very similarly to the banana slugs (at least on land).

that slug is ridiculous. i love it. i think its hilarious that you guys went off to the redwood forrest while everyone was calling you and worrying about what might have happened to you. im jealous. it looks like you guys had a really good time.
Ahh! the banana slug. The highlight of 5th grade science camp. If you kiss one, your lips will go numb for a while–at least that’s what everyone says. I never tried to find out!
